Connecting Linksys WRE54G and WAG300N
Yes it works. No, that doesn’t take hours. No, that’s not complicated. Just follow the receipt.
- get ride of the installation CD, unless you want to give your nerves a try.
- login your WAG300N (usually 192.168.1.1) and do the following actions:
- under Wireless->security, disable all security (you’ll enable it back later). Save changes; at this point, the nice thing will reboot..login again and do the next step
- under Setup, scroll down until you see “network setup”. Make sure you’ll allow enough DHCP clients within your IP range. For instance, if you have the default value, 50, you’ll allocate IP adresses up to 149. The WRE54G, per default, is on the 240. Thus, under “Maximum Number of DHCP Users:”, put 155. Save changes and enjoy another reboot.
- Plug your WRE54G to a power outlet.
- hold down the “autoconfigure” button down for 30 seconds.
- you should have two blue leds.
- unplug the WRE54G from the power.
- wait 15 sec and plug it in again.
- in your favorite browser, type down the WRE54G address: 192.168.1.240
- the login is void (leave it blank) and the password is “admin” (without the quotes)
- report the address of your gateway in the appropriate field. If you don’t know what your gateway address is, it’s the one you typed in to login on your WAG300N..usually 192. 168.1.1
- in the SSID field, type the name of your wireless network
- save everything. Don’t wait for the “server rebooting” window to refresh. On Vista, it never does.
- make some tests around your favorite place. You should have a neat signal at every places within the WRE54G range.
To enable security – do these points chronologically, or it won’t work:
- login to the WRE54G
- enable wireless security with whatever parameters you’re familiar to. Save. It reboots..
- login to the WAG300N
- under Wireless->security, enable exactly the SAME parameters than these introduced in the WRE54G
- Save and the damn thing reboots..
- unplug and plug back the WRE54G
- try to connect to you favorite wireless network.
Have a break. You deserve it.

October 5, 2008 at 4:21 am /That’s correct. Linksys states that the WAG300N doesn’t work with a range expander. But..it works!
The problem with range expander is that you have only half of the bandwidth at disposal. Thus, only 27Mps. Add range and the signal strength really sucks.
